Ever since Google introduced their Android operating system, many online bloggers said that it will “kill” iOS in a few years. True, the numbers of applications on the Android store is almost at the number in iOS App Store and the number of Android devices sold last year in the US beat iPhone sales by a large amount.

However, many fail to see that although Apple is a hardware and software manufacturer, Google isn’t. Google merely produces the software for other manufacturers to use — the only phone it makes itself is the Nexus (although arguably, it was HTC who made the Nexus One and Samsung has produced the current Nexus S).

This creates a situation where one cannot compare Android and iOS side-by-side. If we do compare both operating systems, then Apple has done extraordinarily well to keep such a high market share. Taking into account all the manufacturers who use the Android operating system, they greatly outnumber Apple.

Why is this? There is a simple explanation, as Windows has somewhat done with its new operating system, Apple standardises the hardware to be used with their software. This creates a synergy (apologies for the marketing-speak) which no other manufacturer can match. Google powered phones are slow, fragmented and clunky.

Now, before your Apple-fanboy radars start bleeping — just read any review of an Android phone, although the flexibility of such phones gets praise, they are let down by cheap hardware and generally clunky software. Apple hardware just works, because of the close link between the hardware and the software.

I feel that I may have slightly veered off the point, but I think that the explanations above prove that iOS and Android OS are nothing alike. The same thing goes for comparing Ubuntu to OSX, they simply are nothing alike at all. And they never will be anything alike: the chances that Apple will give out their software to other hardware manufacturers is basically none, and their premise that the iOS software is ‘open’ is completely ridiculous. (Andy Rubin’s tweet after Steve Jobs’ comment about openness highlighted this).

As mentioned, there are advantages to a closed system: e.g. Everything just works — but you have to figure that someone at Apple right now is worried about the impending force that is the open platform of Android. Developers want to make the most money and they aren’t going to choose a system which forces them to do certain things. Although this system has worked up to now, I think that soon, developers will leave the iOS platform and move to Android.

Then again, this all depends on what Apple releases hardware-wise in the coming years. With the preview of OS 10.7 earlier this year, the Mac is set to become a lot more exciting — the links between mobile and desktop computing have allowed Apple to produce an operating system which is probably like nothing we’ve ever seen. This is likely to drag developers back in.

Apple has a habit of creating things which we don’t know will be popular until a few months or years afterwards — they innovate. The question is, will their closed system and lack of diversity in the hardware sector hold them back? Or will further innovations in the App Store create a system that the likes of Google or Microsoft can’t even compete with: a fewe months ago, it seemed like the App Store would become the monopoly of the mobile app software sector that Microsoft once was in the desktop market, but more open systems have challenged Apple — only times will tell whether the totalitarian dictatorship or the primitive communism will rule.

Music and movie purchasing services, like iTunes, allow users to easily and relatively cheaply purchase media over the cloud to view on their computers and mobile devices. Many have said that iTunes would spell the end to illegal downloads, however the problem is still rife — especially among younger populations.

The question is, why? With applications like iTunes and Amazon Music, one can purchase music at the click of a button and both also offer DRM free music now: so it can’t be ease of use that is causing the problem. Also, at just under (or over, in some cases) $1 per track, it can’t be price that is causing the problem either. Therefore, there is another hidden cause — which I believe is status.

Go into any school or educational establishment and you immediately find cliques or certain groups of pupils that ‘stick together’ — ‘friendship groups’, if you will. Of course, within any group there are hierarchical establishments, and I believe that this is why people still illegally download. It’s not that it’s too difficult to download music legally, it’s not that it’s too expensive; it’s that people are concerned about their image (Granted, this may not be the whole problem, some individuals just have an irrational hate of the record industry.)

I propose a system whereby the user is visually rewarded for downloading music legally, through badges and suchlike. ‘Badges’ and other rewards seemed to gain notoriety after the launch of such services as Foursquare and Gowalla. Let’s just think about what these services are: people are openly displaying their whereabouts to other people to, in essence, show off — and human beings like to show off. Without this reward system, would these services have such a large user base? Probably not. (For example, I know a website called Fast Society — it is similar to Foursquare is many ways but it doesn’t display your location to strangers, only to people you specify, and there is no reward system. Although only a start-up business, this service hasn’t taken off.)

So, there should be a badge system when downloading media — for example, on the day of a specific album release, if you download that album you get a limited edition first day badge. This could be used in conjunction with a simple follower system — allowing the individual to compare badges and again providing another example to ‘show off’ thereby boosting the users’ egos.

This could be easily integrated into iTunes: the user would say whether they want to create a media profile with their existing iTunes account, then using another domain the user would be able to choose a username etc. The profile would be linked with Twitter & Facebook allowing purchases to be easily shared across multiple profiles on the web.

Along with the badge system, ‘physical’ rewards should be given as well. I’ve been using a site called Go Miso recently which is essentially Foursquare for TV Shows and Movies — i.e. You check in whenever you’re watching something. Revision3 was a pioneer of the service and offered rewards for Tekzilla viewers. This should be the same with media purchases — if you purchase many songs from an artist then you should get discounts on any other songs you download from them. The iTunes “Genius” system would also work here — to encourage users to buy more tracks and to buy tracks from different artists (thus keeping record companies happy), free songs from similar artists which may appeal to the users’ tastes would be offered. A similar system would be used for movies — buy more movies, get more discounts.

So, that’s how to stop illegal downloaders. Sure, there will still be some who choose to download illegally for financial or other personal reasons — but the large population who choose to download illegally for no reason at all, would be swayed by rewards. However, for illegal software downloads, it is more difficult to prevent. Most people download software illegally just to try it out, like Photoshop for example. I believe that companies need to offer more flexible free ‘trials’ and reduce their prices overall — no budding teenage artist is going to spend money to purchase Photoshop as it is so expensive. This leads to piracy and a crackdown on creativity.

Reward, Reduce and Rethink.

Iʼm an avid fan of the Olympic Games and naturally, I like to keep up with the latest news from the Games by checking out news websites, twitter feeds and watching this site — the Team GB Olympic Games site. As someone who is pretty aware of what makes a good website, I wanted to do a redesign of the Team GB page to clear a few things up and to make it generally easier to use.

The Vancouver 2010 Team GB Website

Above is what the a user will see when loading the site up. Firstly, itʼs not immediately obvious what the site is about — we see slogans such as “The Best of British” and “Be Your Personal Best” right in the centre, which a user is most likely to see first. However, pushed over to the left is a small Team GB logo, which at first glance doesnʼt really mean anything. To really have any real ʻpresenceʼ this logo needs placed directly in the centre without anything to the left or right of it. The royal red and blue lion suits well, however a different typeface could be used to enhance the brand not only on the website but through the actual Games on billboards & television appearances as well. Gill Sans is a font which I think would suit well — popularised by other British brands such as the London transport authority, the font face is easily readable and instantly recognisable.

Gill Sans typeface

The “social media” bar at the top of the website is useful, but I donʼt think itʼs full potential is being harnessed particularly well. Moving the bar below the main title / logo area allows for bigger buttons and bigger presence. More emphasis needs to be placed on these buttons — although a twitter feed has been placed on the right hand side of the page, replacing the “Latest news” section with tweets would save time and be more streamlined. Also, embedding the latest YouTube videos and Facebook posts would be beneficial to the site; driving more traffic to these outlets and providing userswith lots of content!

Of course, above this would be the navigation bar. Currently, itʼs pretty vague (& it breaks in Chrome — blogs is pushed to the next line). This bar can be simplified into about four or five blocks: Firstly, I really donʼt see the need of a “Home” button on any website nowadays. We have been socialised almost, into knowing that clicking on a recurrent logo / title will take us back to the main page — hence, this button is unnecessary. “News” is okay as it is, however “Results” and “Schedule” should be included under this, as “News” is basically an umbrella. Again, “Vancouver 2010” is sort of an umbrella under which “Sports” could be put. “Gallery” and “Video” should just be under one tab of “Media” — or, they could just redirect to the appropriate YouTube and Flickr (which they donʼt currently use) accounts. “Blogs” can be keptseparate and so can “Messages” — The site seems to make a big deal about these messages further down the page — postcards which people can send in to athletes. However, many users will glance at this in the navigation bar and will not really investigate it further unless theyʼre genuinely interested. This button needs to be either completely separate from the bar, having itʼs own space below or to the side, or needs to be made more ʻobviousʼ.

Title redesigns

Going down the page, you see that they have basically tried to include everything on the front page. The user has to scroll down to see content which they may or may not actually want to see — when a user opens the page, they should immediately see what is currently most important, and there should be nothing else cluttering up the page. “12 Brits to Watch” in my opinion isnʼt that important and neither is the “Have Your Say” & the 90s-esque poll. All unnecessary. Ditch the message-board for Twitter replies and Facebook comments, and add share links to Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, Digg etc near the top of the page not right at the bottom! The images section should be linked to a Flickr account, with all photos (and I know that this sounds a little enthusiastic) available as Creative Commons and at full-resolution. Removing the Newsletter for RSS feeds will also save space.

Team GB website redesign

Iʼm sure that towards 2012 and the London Olympics, this website will be completely redesigned and will most likely harness social media and provide a quick method for users to get their news. However, above is my semi-complete redesign of the landing page. Itʼs much cleaner and clearer — with only nine links compared to a previous 15 in the header of the page. Font faces have been streamlined and so have colours — establishing a recognisable brand. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr integration are included with options to share stories / blog posts to other social networks providing users with an easy springboard to get the news they want to share to the people they want to share it to quickly and easily.

What do you think of the redesign? What would you do to improve the original website and to improve my redesign? Leave your views in the comments!
